Malta-Roma-Messina: The Geographies and Normativities of a Local Cult of the Virgin Mary

A conference at Roma Tre by Chiara Franceschini about the imaginations and the geographies of a local cult and about Inquisitorial control on sacred images in different centres of Mediterranean Europe.

In this conference, Chiara expanded her research on the Messinese Madonna della Lettera and the controversial status of the images spreading its cult in the Mediterranean. A previous elaboration of this topic, presenting new documents and a first discussion of the intersections between cult, the political role of images, and the interventions of the Roman Inquisition, was published last year: follow this link to see our previous post about this article, which is also available here.
