“M. Francesco continued: ‘The answer to the question of the instruments of the martyrdom displayed by the Saints in the Judgement, which you and M. Ruggiero disapproved of so much but which to me seem well done for the sole reason of making manifest the testimony of their faith. Because, even if they are not going to be displayed on that day, I think there will be some clear sign to amplify the glory of these saints and to bring confusion to tyrants. And also to show the ignorant that on that day Lord will not forget and never will forget his elect, ensuring that they receive the reward for their unwavering constancy and most perfect faith’.
M. Ruggiero replied: ‘It will not happen that the martyrs display any instruments, either to prove their faith or to bring confusion to tyrants, because testimony enough will be torments and the punishments suffered in hell by their prosecutors. And since the martyrs will appear alive, glorious, and grand before their eyes, the weight of remorse on the conscience of their prosecutors will be enough for them to be recognized; and, as a consequence, the tormented will say: «Behold, those whom we once thought mad are numbered now among the children of God, and other similar words that are written in the book of wisdom». But we can allow this one of those fictions permitted for the sake of the ignorant, in order that their minds may take in whatever little they can’.”

“Sequitò M. Francesco: ‘La risposta degli istrumenti che mostrano i santi in questo Giudizio, che voi, M. Ruggiero, tanto biasimate et io dico che ben fatto mi pare in questo modo: solo per dimostrare il testimonio de la lor fede. Ché, se bene non gli mostreranno in quel giorno, penso che qualche evidente segno vi sarà per accrescer loro gloria, e confugione ai tiranni, e per mostrare agli ignoranti che il Signore non si sarà scordato in quel giorno e che anco mai si scorda degli eletti suoi, che non ricevano il premio de la loro saldissima costanza e perfettissima fede’.
Rispose M. Ruggiero: ‘Non caderà che i martiri, per argomento de la lor fede e confugione de’ tiranni, dimostrino alcuno istrumento, ché assai ne hanno fatto testimonio i sofferiti tormenti e le pene infernali che aranno patite essi persecutori. E per riconoscerli basterà la rimordente e grave cosienza, che sempre vivi, gloriosi e grandi gli ripresenterà avanti gli occhi loro; onde essi cruciate diranno: «Ecco, quelli che già noi istimammo pazzi, ora sono connumerati tra i figliuoli di Dio», et altre parole tali, che sono scritte ne la Sapienza. Ma questo possiamo passare per una di quelle finzioni che per capacità degli ignoranti si permettono, acciò le menti loro s’appaghino di quello poco che possono’.”
