Analyzing the iconography of Christ’s birth scene, Francisco Pacheco examined the reasons why artists insisted on representing Christ naked (i.e., representative of poverty, more beautiful naked than wrapped up). His negative criticism was directed at the artist Juan de Roelas (1570-1625). It is assumed by the scholars that Pacheco had personal problems with this artist just mentioned, since the artwork cited by the author as an example of a wrong depiction was part of an artistic commission that, instead of being made to Pacheco, the chosen artist was Ruelas.
