In 1662, a Christ “varn de dolores” (Man of sorrows) was processed in the Augustinian convent of Tacoronte, Tenerife. It turns out to be a synthesis of “El Cristo de la Victoria de Serradilla”, man of sorrows, by Domingo de la Rioja, with the emblems of the Passion made in 1635, and of the “Cristo resucitado con la cruz en su brazo y una aureola celestial y el El Nio Jess triunfador del demonio y del pecado aplastando la calavera y la serpiente”. The Supreme Council finally accepted the evidence, overcoming the misgivings aroused by the negative effects of its ambiguity towards the Guanche people: there were reproductions of it at the Court and in Rome. It was not banned, it could not be, a symptom of a flexible and interesting attitude.
