An old Christian (cristiano viejo) from Portugal does not believe in images of saints and the Virgin Mary, nor in relics

The old Christian of Portuguese origin, Gaspar Rebela, “looking at some pictures of Our Lady and St. Francis and the Magdalene, asked what they were and why, telling him that they were pictures of Our Lady and of the saints to remind us of those in heaven, he replied that God alone was to be worshipped and that we should not pray to the pictures of the saints [. …] it was written and commanded God that no living thing could be painted and replying that those images were not worshipped or worshipped for what they were but for what they represented, he replied that he believed in God and told him that many times it had been seen that God worked miracles in the images”. Regarding relics, he said that when “he asked one of the painter’s daughters if she wanted them and she replied that she did and gave him a piece of wood saying that it was from the wood on which Jesus Christ had been placed and that if he threw it into the fire it would also burn, and saying to him why should it be thrown into the fire, being a relic of Our Lord Jesus Christ, he replied that he should see what property those relics had, that coming by sea, although he carried many of them close to him, he would have drowned for not knowing how to swim”.

The old Christian of Portuguese origin, Gaspar Rebela, “mirando unas ymagines de Nuestra Señora y de San Francisco y de la Magdalena pregunto que hera aquello y para que diciendole que heran ymagines de Nuestra Señora y de los sanctos para acordarnos por ellas de los que estan en el cielo, respondio que a solo Dios se abia de adorar y que no se habia de rogar a las ymagines de los sanctos […] estaba escrito y mandaba Dios que no se pudiese pintar cosa viva y replicandole que no se adoraban ni reberenciaban aquellas ymagines por lo que heran si no por lo que representaban respondio que muy bien creya el en Dios y diciendole que muchas vezes se habia visto que obraba Dios milagros en las ymagines.” Regarding relics, he said that when “combido a una hija del pintor si queria dellas y repondiole que si le dio un pedacillo de madera diciendo que hera del madero en que se habia arrimado Jesucristo y que si lo hechaba en el fuego que tambien se quemaria, y diciendole que para que se habia de hechar en el fuego siendo reliquia de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, respondio él que mirase que propiedad tenian esas reliquias, que viniendo por la mar aunque llevaba muchas cerca se hubiera ahogado por no saber nadar”.
