The inquisitors of the city of Cuenca wrote to the Council of the Inquisition sending certain playing cards with some figures made as it seems in derision of our Christian religion.

“The reverend inquisitors of the city of Cuenca have written to the Council what you will see from the chapter of their letter that with this one they are sent about certain playing cards that were taken to that Holy Office with some figures made, as it seems, in violation of our Christian religion. And because the said inquisitors report having understood from the person who brings them those that in this city they have seen playing with other similar ones, it has seemed to me to warn you of this so that you may know it and make the provision and diligences that will seem convenient to you, so that if some of the said naypes are found in this city and district they may all be collected, and you may send them to us here so that what is convenient may be provided for. May our Lord preserve your reverend persons. At Madrid, the twenty-fifth of August 1568.”
